The Return of Blue and Red Spandex

Of course, most ppl would understand that I'm talking about Superman who 'returned' to our screen this summer. We went to watch it the night b4 i left for the Zonal Assembly in Miri. Before that, I didn't really feel too keen on it, coz I didn't like the older movies. But watching the trailer and some 'making of' features, thought it looked pretty interesting.

So yeah, I was pleasantly surprised with how well it turned out. It was rather long for a summer movie, 2 hours 40 mins. But the story was very interesting, with some humourous parts, and nice action scenes. That opening rescue of the Boeing 777 was such a great comeback entrance for the Man of Steel. A bit predictable, but nicely executed, especially with how Lois reacted to it. I bet a lot of gals had the same reaction as I did when Superman (Brandon Routh) first appeared onscreen. 'Wahh..so handsome'....but i didn't say it out loud, unlike some girls i heard around me in the cinema. Lol.

I must say, they did well to choose Brandon Routh to take over as the new Superman, he does look similar to the late Christopher Reeves, but also has his own style. Maintains the slightly vulnerable look, with a slightly more friendly/humourous face. Apparently, he was too WELL endowed in THAT part that the costumers had to pad his suit with socks to even it out. LOL!! And geez, he's damm tall.

Wat's interesting was what they've done to Lois Lane. The only Lois i remembered was Teri Hatcher from the TV series. But here, Lois smokes, or tries to, and has a son, PLUS a fiance (who happens to b Richard White, played by James Marsden/ Cyclops from X-men). Still the same in some ways, such as stubborn, always looking for the BIG story and such. But she thinks she doesn't need Superman anymore. In the end, they all have to help each other to get out of the mess.

Twins? James Marsden (left) vs Chris Pine from Princess Diaries 2

Then there's the Cyclops, oops Richard White VS Superman thing for Lois' heart. Most would think, how can an ordinary man (or even Cyclops) compete with Superman, who seems invincible, with his bulletproof body, x-ray/laser eyes, 'super' breath, and is solar power rechargable. Well, maybe a normal man doesn't have to fight crime, and has more time to spend with Lois? Interesting to note that James Marsden has been in movies where he always almost or loses the girl.

And how about Lex Luthor, Superman's constant nemesis? He's played by Kevin Spacey, and seems a bit more humorous than what I imagined Lex to be. More greedy than truly evil, but yeah I guess Lex was more money minded than most bad guys. His partner, Kitty also had some funny moments and turned out to have some predictable part in the finale. Lex's goons were the typical brawn rather than brain. Most of them didn't even speak throughout the whole movie. Surprisingly, that Indian guy from the dumb movie 'Harold & Kumar go to White Castle' was a bad guy, and didn't get a single line.

But enuff about Superman. Let's talk about the superhero who probably started the resurgence of the superhero movie genre. SPIDERMAN!....Most ppl would know that there will be a Spiderman 3 and it's still in the process of filming. I found a site that had some spoilers and boy...were they shocking!..If you really want to know what they are, drop me a line in the chatbox and I'll send you the link.

They've just released the Official Teaser Trailer and you can view it at the official Sony site here. Those who aren't too bothered about quality can view it through the Youtube video below.

In the trailer alone, you can see the 3 villains that will be showing up in Spiderman 3. Green Goblin of course, as obviously 'hinted' from the 2nd movie, then Sandman and most exciting of all, is VENOM! Venom is mostly considered the favourite villain in the Spiderman world, coz he was part of Spidey for awhile. And well, that black suit just looks so cool. Before the trailer came out, the poster showing Spidey in his black suit was thought to be a clever hoax. But now it's confirmed!...And there are hints/rumours/spoilers that there will be a 4th villain in the movie. Wow....so many villains at a time? From the site of spoilers that I read, apparently, there could actually be 5, 2 of which do not play major parts unlike the previous 3 mentioned, or are still in normal/not evil form. All in all, looks to be a very good movie and it sucks that we have to wait a whole year for it to come out. Blekk

On the set of Spiderman 3

The superhero movie genre seems to be doing well, with a few more movies in the pipeline. Here's the brief run-down:
1. Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer - It's rumored that the Silver Surfer will be appearing alongside the F4.
2. Wolverine - Since he's the most popular X-Men, he'll be getting his own movie, which will probably come out next yr.
3. Wonder Woman - to be directed by Joss Whedon, who came up with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. He's still in the process of writing the storyline
4. Transformers - Not sure if they are really considered superheroes but oh well. Release date is set for 4th July 2007.
5. Batman - They're looking to update the previous Batman movies, and give them new twists or improve on them. There's definitely a lot to improve on. Robin Williams is keen to play the new Joker, but..might not be suitable?

Considering the success of Superman Returns, most probably, there will be another Superman story. There should be a few more movies in the pipeline, so once I get any interesting tidbits, I'll definitely update you all on them. Next, I'll b updating on my trip to Miri, so stay tuned. LOL ;)
